2015 Black National HIV/AIDS Awareness Day-Las Vegas

2015 Black National HIV/AIDS Awareness Day-Las Vegas

YES, I am my brother’s and sister’s keeper. Fight HIV/AIDS!

We have to say, 260,800 Black folks dying from this single disease is an overwhelming number to keep in our mind and hold on to. That means we have to acknowledge, Black people we know and love, even those we don't know, are being lost each and every year and stand as one, committed to preventing this number from climbing even higher. Black Americans are ALARMED-but not surprised-about what the statistics tell us about HIV among young Black men. Black Americans are DEVASTATED to know and realize YEARS of struggle to have Black voices heard have once again been DISCOUNTED AND DISREGARDED, leaving us all to wonder DOES AMERICA CARE about Black American's lives?

As we stand on the threshold of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, I challenge all the Las Vegas community to COME together as ONE and join us, let's consider what #GOMOJO is advocating and fighting for and then let's act accordingly. At this phase of the epidemic we are ALL NEEDED; YOUNG people are DESPERATELY needed to execute, create and implement youth-driven interventions that exercise control over their own lives and the lives of their peers. Elders and those who have travelled this road before and everyone in between are needed, too.

A CALL FOR ACTION TO ALL LEADERS & THE CITY OF LAS VEGAS

JOIN #GOMOJO and let's finish the fight to become the first WORLD #RECORDSETTER city to achieve an #AIDSFREEGEN!

"To be clear, we still face enormous challenges. Far too many people are dying from this disease. We need to reach more people with both prevention and treatment services. But today, thanks to remarkable scientific discoveries and the work of countless individuals, organizations and governments, an AIDS-free generation is not just a rallying cry—it is a goal that is within our reach.

Together, we can deliver a better future to millions across the globe. A future where children are not born with HIV… where teenagers and adults are at far lower risk of contracting the virus… where those who do have the virus get lifesaving treatment. A future where every child has the chance to live up to his or her God-given potential.

That’s a future worth fighting for, together." -Hillary Clinton November 29, 2012

Our community outreach does not impose a formal structure of activities on the target population because it occurs on our own terms. It is based on the face-to-face contact between the outreach worker and the community members. Our outreach interventions provide information, some provide counseling, and some provide both, depending on our sponsors desired components.

    • Individuals
      • Focused surveillance of subpopulations now living with HIV, including seniors and women, so the information gathered can help improve care;
      • Online Education Tools and Resources
    • Societal
      • Locally, there are community based organizations, events and activities for you to get involved with.
    • Institutional
      • Real partnership between the CDC and the communities most affected by HIV It is also important to foster wider availability of comprehensive services for people living with HIV and their partners through partnerships among health departments, community-based organizations, and health care and social service providers

Health is Fun

    • Understanding HIV In the era of increasingly effective treatments for HIV, people with HIV are living longer, healthier, and more productive lives. Deaths from HIV infection have greatly declined in the United States since the 1990s. As the number of people living with HIV grows, it will be more important than ever to increase national HIV prevention and health care programs.

There are gender, race, and ethnicity disparities in new HIV infections.

    • Get Educated: Awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS empowers individuals and communities to act accordingly.
      • Basic HIV 101 to Comprehensive sexuality education
      • Health and Wellness Coaches
    • Get FIT-
      • Dancing, Riding, Hiking, Biking, Skating, Running, Walking, Skipping

Help is coming addresses emerging Issues in HIV, violence against women and LBQTIA

    • Health-Connecting people who need help to the people and organizations that help-i.e. medical and dental healthcare management, legal assistance, utility assistance, housing and counseling support.
      • Using the Affordable Care Act to plug leaks in the HIV treatment cascade;
      • Online Education Tools and Resources
    • Mentor, prevention and linkage to care programs / Helping low income families, resources for kids on the streets, homeless, fight poverty

As the number of people living with HIV increases and more people become aware of their HIV status, prevention strategies that are targeted specifically for HIV-infected people are becoming more important. Prevention work with people living with HIV focuses on:

  • Linking to and staying in treatment.
  • Increasing the availability of ongoing HIV prevention interventions.
  • Providing prevention services for their partners.

Street of Love we fill the MOJO Lifesavers with condoms from locally funded condom distribution organizations and combined with our condom holder is our community’s single most powerful and enduring feet-on-the-street response to the AIDS pandemic. ALL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ARE REQUIRING more prevention—targeted to BLACK and LATIN populations at highest risk—to promote innovative efforts like condom distribution to places the people who need them in the places they go.

        • Condoms
        • Treatment as Prevention-
        • PEP
        • PREP
      • A very important part of why we believe we can be successful is because when people have access to condoms and medications they are not contracting other STI’s, will remain virally suppressed and they will not be infectious and the virus cannot be spread.
      • HIV prevention messaging and education materials that deal frankly with sex; we are an ongoing media and social campaigns for the general public and HIV prevention interventions for uninfected persons who engage in risky behaviors are critical.
        • Information inserts-tips on condom negotiation and how to properly wear, linkage to care, medication adherence, doctor appointments and viral lode trackers
    • Revised HIV testing guidelines, expanded testing beyond traditional points of care, and encouragement of next-generation tests that better detect acute HIV infection, when viral load is highest;

    • Improving access to quality health care for populations disproportionately affected by HIV, such as persons of color and gay and bisexual men, is a fundamental public health strategy for HIV prevention. People getting care for HIV can receive:
      • Antiretroviral therapy
      • Screening and treatment for other diseases (such as sexually transmitted infections)
      • HIV prevention interventions
      • Mental health services
      • Other health services

Walk & Talk-A Task infotainment campaign challenging scicene versus general public open to get involved to de-stigmatize HIV and dispel misinformation about its transmission; Knowledge and power are the two factors that can affect genders and at-risk populations considerably, often in very different forms. They not only direct why we make the decisions we do, but they also help explain why we sometimes put ourselves at risk against our otherwise better judgment.

    • More sensitive HIV epidemiology and precise data about key subgroups such as transgender women (NOT classified with gay men), trans men, sex workers, homeless people, young heroin injectors, and sexual networks of gay and bi men;Reforming the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system;

Hold Your Stake is about businesses and their people; a community-level intervention designed for and developed by entrepreneurs and community stakeholders, getting involved in essential advocacy and policy efforts.

    • Public perception in the United States about the seriousness of the HIV epidemic has declined in recent years. There is evidence that risky behaviors may be increasing among uninfected people, especially gay and bisexual men.
