MILITARTY SEXUAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS- Key Resources

APRIL - SEXUAL HEALTH

Sexual health is a state of well-being that involves physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions, and is based on a positive, equitable, and respectful approach to sexuality, relationships, and reproduction that is free of coercion, fear, discrimination, stigma, shame, and violence. The resources in this toolbox focus on the prevention of unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Health educators need to address sexual health. Despite the fact that HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and unplanned pregnancies are preventable, 5000 active duty sailors and marines were diagnosed with chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis in 2012 [1] another active duty sailor or marine is diagnosed with HIV every 4 days [2], and two of three enlisted female sailors say her last pregnancy while in the Navy was unplanned [3]
