Gone

Gone

by Emily Trimble

It was there that they were standing at the bus stop.

Both sitting on the peeling red bench.

The girl having tear-stained cheeks.

Scraping her shoes along the sidewalk.

The boy stroking them away with his thumb

As she leans into him

You can hear the rumbling of the dull, blue bus

as it comes up the street

Getting closer and closer

They stand together and he pulls her in for a tight hug

She squeezes him hard

Sobbing quietly into his shoulder with her eyes squeezed shut

Gripping onto his black hoodie

The bus stops and opens its door they pull away and whisper

He enters the bus and through the window you could see him find a seat

She stands there as the bus starts up and pulls away.

She stands there even after the bus is long gone.
