Esquelbecq is the Hay on Wye of French Flanders, with a yearly book fair and several literature orientated shops in the main square.
The impressive chateau off the corner of the square is privately owned, but often open for exhibitions and garden walks.
The large church which dominates the main square was nearly completely destroyed by fire in 1976. There is a small exhibition inside which tells the story of the disaster and subsequent restoration.
