Traditionally a beer producing and hop growing region, France Flanders suffered like so many other areas with the industrialisation of brewing in the 70s to 90s. This led to the inevitable take over and closure of numerous local breweries, a trend that thankfully has most definitely now gone into reverse.
When I first moved to the region ten years ago, Zannekin in Cassel had just recently closed its doors and Thiriez, Saint-Sylvestre and Beck were the only independents left. Since then the number has steadily increased to around fourteen, along with an associated increase in local Hop production.
