Bergues is undoubtedly one of the prettiest towns in French Flanders, but this creates as many drawbacks as it does plusses.
It is certainly a lovely town to take a walk around, what with its preserved town walls and interesting architecture, but it is not somewhere I would personally base a holiday, as it lacks a closeness and identity when compared to the likes of Cassel or Bailleul.
Unfortunately it also suffers from a massive dose of the 'Ch'ti Storm' which has local restaurants and shops jumping on the bandwagon and ignoring their true Flemish identity.
The Flemish culture does very much come to life during the annual Carnival, which is regarded as one of the best in the region.
The Belfry and its Carillon stands proudly in the center of town which on Mondays is surrounded by a bustling market which is well worth a visit.
