Cassel, Kerelshof

Top destination in French Flanders!

The 'Kerels' is THE meeting point for beer loving locals and visitors alike. Located in a prominent position on the cobbled terrace of the Grand Place, this is one of the oldest buildings in Cassel.

The attractive exterior draws you into the tastefully furnished and decorated interior, which avoids the tweeness of many 'new wave' Estaminets. Much is made of hanging hop vines along with pictures and photos from contemporary local artists.

This is a true Estaminet where popping in just for a drink is positively encouraged and where the interesting list of 80 plus beers might persuade you to stay a while longer than planned.

There is also a house beer 'BierLala' which is brewed in collaboration with Brasserie Thiriez . Denis (the Landlord of Kerels) and local beer nut Olivier worked closely with Daniel from Thiriez and the end result has proven to be a great success. The collaboration eventually led to Olivier leaving his IT job in order to start full time at the brewery! The original brew was a 'Red IPA', the second a blond and the most recent is an 'IPA Stout". The beer is served on draught and also available in 75cl bottles to take away.

Traditional bar snacks of cheese cubes and Saucisse sèche are always available, plus a chalk board list of more substantial dishes, including various Planches, Carbonade (maison), Potjevleesch, Welsh (rarebit) (maison) and Tarte au Fromage au Pave Cassel (Maison).

If you see a short ageing Englishman at the bar, with a bad French accent, say hello and offer him a drink, it will most likely be me.
