Carnaval

In many towns and villages in Flanders, Carnaval is the main event of the year. They can vary in size from the massive Dukerque Carnavals to cosy bashes in small villages such as Godewaersvelde and Houtkerque.

Each Carnaval has its own important traditions and form, whether it be the dancing Giants of Cassel or the Herring throwing Mayor of Dunkerque.

The common binding factors are the attention to home made often extraordinary costumes, traditional vulgar songs and Carnaval quantities of alcohol!

Residents often open their doors to friends and friends of friends creating what is locally called a 'Chappelle'. Drink and food are provided by the host and once consumed, the guests move on in search of the next 'Chappelle' or Bar.
