Dunkirk was pretty much bombed flat during WW2, and much of the centre's reconstruction was obviously done within a budget, creating utilitarian buildings that are showing their age. Having said this, the town seems to rise above these architectural limitations and manages to hold its head high.
There are plenty of great food shops, some fine restaurants and a general liveliness that makes a visit well worthwhile.
The Dunkerquoise are renowned for their zest for life, culminating in the 6 week long series of Carnivals at the end of winter.
