3DP-TIPS: 3D Printing Training & Instructional Printing Support
The Fabrication Underground offers several 3D printers available for reservation by faculty, instructors, and student advisors to support classroom instruction. Our 3DP-TIPS service stands out because it provides students with a hands-on experience with the technology. Upon completing the required online training, students receive a 'Certificate of Completion' in PDF format, which can be easily submitted for assignments. The training materials are accessible through our Equipment Certification Canvas course, open to everyone.
3D Printer Available:
Entry Level 3D Printing
Prusa MK 4: The Prusa MK 4 desktop fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer is an easy-to-learn, simple-to-use, cost-effective solution, ideal for beginners. Students operate the Prusa MK 4 3D printers themselves, but before doing so, they learn machine operations and how to 'slice' their 3D computer model using Prusa-Slicer, covered in our Canvas course.
General Purpose 3D Printing
Formlabs Form 3: The Formlabs Form 3 stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer combined with the Form Auto is a great choice for those requiring more from a 3D printer. This high-resolution, resin-based system is perfect for users with an intermediate skill set. Students submit build files to the print queue for review and learn how to operate the Form 3, position parts properly, and generate supports using the PreForm slicer by Formlabs, all covered in our Canvas course.
Large Format 3D Printing
BigRep Studio G2: The BigRep Studio G2 is an industrial fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer designed to print large objects up to 1 meter across. Built on simple 'no-nanny' technology, it is best for users with advanced FFF skills. Students submit build files to the print queue for review after learning how to operate the BigRep and generate build files using the Blade slicer, covered in detail in our Canvas course.
