3DP-TIPS (3DP Technical Instruction & Printing Support)
The Fabrication Underground offers several 3D printers available for reservation by faculty, instructors, and student advisors to support classroom instruction. Our 3DP-TIPS service stands out because it provides students with a hands-on experience with the technology. Upon completing the required online training, students receive a 'Certificate of Completion' in PDF format, which can be easily submitted for assignments. The training materials are accessible through our Equipment Certification Canvas course, open to everyone.
Available 3D Printers:
Entry Level 3D Printing
Prusa MK 4s: The Prusa MK 4s desktop fused‑filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer is an easy‑to‑learn, simple‑to‑use, and cost‑effective platform ideal for beginners. Students operate the Prusa MK4s independently, but before doing so, they complete training on machine operation and learn how to “slice” their 3D models using PrusaSlicer. These foundational skills are covered in our Canvas course, ensuring students are prepared to print safely and successfully.
Advanced 3D Printing
Prusa XL: The Prusa XL is a multi‑toolhead fused‑filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer that offers a larger build volume, high reliability, precision, and advanced multi‑color workflows. Students operate the Prusa XL themselves, but before doing so, they learn machine operations, multi‑toolhead behavior, and how to prepare their 3D models using PrusaSlicer. These skills are introduced and practiced in our Canvas course, ensuring students can print safely and confidently on the XL’s larger platform.
