Usage and Safety
Fabric Shears
Here are some tips for using fabric shears:
Use for fabric only: Cutting other materials (such as paper) can damage or blunt the scissors
Use the right part of the blade: When cutting heavy materials, move closer to the pivot point near the screw.
Make small cuts: Small cuts help keep you going straight and keep your cuts clean.
Use the weight of the shears: For straight lines or large curves, use the weight of the shears as support and move your hand forward while cutting.
Open and close slightly: When cutting curves, open and close the shears slightly.
Consider the weight: Before buying, try to borrow a pair to see if they are comfortable.
Sewing Machines
Sewing machines are faster and more precise than hand stitching, which can be time-consuming and laborious. Sewing machines can be used for a variety of purposes, including:
Clothing: Sewing machines can be used to create, repair, and personalize clothing.
Home decor: Sewing machines can be used for home decorating projects.
Crafting: Sewing machines can be used for crafting projects.
Quilting: Sewing machines are a popular tool for quilters.
Some hazards associated with sewing machines include:
Sewing over pins can cause them to break and injure you, damage your machine, or damage your fabric. You should remove pins before sewing or use pin alternatives like clips.
Sewing machines use electricity, so you should be careful to avoid electric shock. You can prevent this by not overloading the machine and using undamaged cords. You should also disconnect the power when you leave the machine.
Using the wrong type of needle can cause it to break or shatter, which can injure you and damage your machine. If your needle breaks, stop using the machine immediately.
Moving parts can catch hair and pull it out, or pull a person into the machine. Be sure to tie up your hair and keep it out of the way of your work space.
Distractions can lead to mistakes and accidents.
Other tips for safe sewing include:

Rotary Cutters
The rotary cutter is intended to cut cloth on a cutting mat. It is not to be used for any other purpose. The blade of the rotary cutter is razor sharp and can easily lacerate you if used or handled improperly. The The following video will teach you how to safely use the rotary cutter. If you are unsure or have questions please seek assistance before using this tool:
Iron and ironing board
Irons can be used to remove creases from fabrics and apply vinyl decals produced on the Cricut. You will want to learn how to use the iron as the heated sole plate and steam produced by the iron can present a burn hazard if improperly used.
