Scary Ghosts
Embroidery sheet and base, needle, thread, scissors,
8 inch diameter
The maine idea for my work really came from my practice circle drawing, seen on the left. I wanted to do something more spooky for halloween, and though this looked cool. I also wanted it to look more cartoonish the serious, and have a kids halloween vibe. I went through multiple ideas before starting my embroidery, but I think the ghost shape I used proved to be effective in my goal and cute. I also wanted to add the grave so the picture had more depth, not just a bunch of thoughts like my sketch.
For this project I did something I do not usually do, embroidery. I am a big fan of sewing and needle felting, and through that this would be a good medium to attempt, similar to the other ones I enjoy. Little did I know that embroidery is significantly more time consuming, and very very easy to mess up. I started by going to joanne and getting the stuff I needed, and then sketched directly onto the canvas to get an outline. One thing i learned about embroidery is that you need to be very thoughtful with how you approach what you do. Embroidering some things first can make them more prominent, and the pattern use use to embroider them is almost the most important part. I also had to use scissors to cut the ends off of the thread. One more thing I would like to save about embroidery thread is that having to separate the thread from the bundle, so that you only have two strands, is one of the most awful and frustrating things i've had to do. most of my project was spent untying knots
The process for this piece is basic, practice sketch, idea, materials, outline, then start, but certain parts could be difficult. One thing that I really appreciate about the process of embroidery is the art of the stitch. Some days I would like to do more into the stitch possibilities, but just making the grass was such a unique way to make art. Every stitch had to be precise in the effort to make a grass texture. I also had to go through the process of filling in things, like the ghosts. Unlike making the grass, filling in is one of the worst things ever and is time consuming, broing, and very easy to mess up. I spent 3 hours one night straight trying to fill in just the ghosts. One thing I would like to point out about my process that is very upsetting to me is that I accidently switched shades of white when doing my project, and the disappointment in myself for making this mistake hurts. I also really enjoyed looking at the back at the end to see my psychotic methods of stitching, and just how much thread i used. In the end I enjoyed the process for embroidery and hope to do it again one day.
