red man
pristol baber, pencil, acrilic paint
9"x6"
for this picture I had to make something out of random ink spots on a piece of paper. It took me awhile to make a picture out of the ink spots because they were in weird spots, but i kept seeing a face kind of shape. I juggled some ideas and made some practice sketches, and i knew that i wanted it to be abstract like the weird face I saw. I then started making a skull kind of shape and I think that inspired the final work, but i then leaned to a more stiff shapes head. After I made the face I choose the color red becasue I wanted the picture to feel eerie. and finally I wanted to juxtapose the eerie read face with a cooler color blue sweater for him to wear. I also made the whole background black to keep with the eerie feel.
I used pristol paper, which is very stiff and able to take paint well, and then some acrylic paint. I also used pencil for an outline, but it is not in the finished picture. I technically used black ink, but it was already on the paper when I picked it out, and is the basis of this project.
the process I followed was probably not traditional but it worked pretty well. I started by making the outline of the person, and then I painted the whole background ,where i wouldn't be drawing the red man, black. I then went on to paint the face in different sections that i seperated, starting with the sides of the head, then doing the face itself. It took me awhile to get the color and shading I want, and that is still probably the thing I would change, but i got to a point where I was happy. I then choose to do the sweater, and this took me awhile to make it not to bright, but not to dark either, and then I attempted to get a fabric texture but dotting the paint brush really fast on different spots. I then let it dry, and in the end I was pretty proud of my piece.
