Sustained Investigation #3

Homework Stress

1.5ft X 1.5ft

Acrylic on black chipboard

For this sustained investigation, I wanted to follow the ideas of youth as stated in my inquiry question through showing the stress of school and other things that comes along with being a teen. To represent these ideas through form, I tried to make my eye bags strong and almost have a droopy looking face to show what it's like being so tired but still having to study or do homework.

For this piece, I first started out with an image that I took of myself, and then the transferred through transfer paper onto the black chipboard using a white marker to see the lines. After my ideas were all on the page, I began to paint. I first painted the background blue to represent feeling tired or sad, before doing the face. On the face, I went in with large chunks of shadows before going in, layering the smaller highlighted areas.

For this piece, I really tried to layer my paints in order to add depth. For this process I tried to let each layer somewhat dry (sometimes) before adding another layer. This really tested my patience. If I were to continue with this piece, I would add something in the background so that the viewer has a better idea of where this person is.
