Beautiful Oops

Under the Sea

8'x12'

This beautiful-oops took me longer than usual to see an image within the black blob. I began thinking and thinking and was stuck on the boring idea of a lock for a key on a door. I wasn’t excited by the thought of drawing that, so I got creative and began thinking of life forms thats body resembled the blob. I pictures a turtle and was immediately sold on it as I love turtles and drawing turtles. I began thinking of ideas of what I knew about turtle’s bodies and their habitats. So, I remembered the turtles I had seen under the water in Florida and decided to use that scene as my inspiration for my turtle under the sea.

I began sketching the turtle's shape out with a 2b pencil to keep the marks light as I knew I would be going over these marks with other colors later. I only needed to draw the turtle's shell for the turtle because the rest of its body was already resembled in the beautiful oops black blob. So, I began brainstorming what I was going to draw for my background to add depth and detail to my piece. I painted the background with watercolors and mixed a pink and a blue together on the paper to create an almost “tie-die” look. I used different color watercolor markers for the details at the bottom.

I experimented with the processes of my ideas for what I was going to make out of the black blob. Beautiful oopses take extra thought at the very beginning, before initially starting the piece to simply figure out what your topic will be, so I made sure to take my time to think of an accurate idea. My project evolved as I began painting new details in the background to add more pops of color to the paper. I am happy with how the details such as the coral came out! I think that the neon colors go very well together and are appealing for the eye.
