SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION #3

Crazy Faces

5.5 X 8.5 in

Marker and Pen

For these pieces, I really just wanted to explore the face again and how colors can really bring out the mood I am trying to display to the viewer that represents mental illness. For the frist face, I wanted to display someone who looks like an average person, but the slight sadness in their face is still visible, and shown through the color blue. I feel that many people fail to recogize that people who may not seem like they need help are often the people who may need support the most. The second face dipicts what it is like to have schizophrenia. This illness is seen through the wide, alarmed eyes, bold warm colors, deep shawdows and jocker-ish mouth.

For these pieces, I really wanted to try something new and competely out of my comfort zone. Using markers is something that I almost never do because of how unforgiving they are. Each line had to be perfect because If I tried to fix a mark, it would become darker. Instead of focusing on being perfect, I instead just added color whereever I wanted, similar to my other sustained investigations when I was using oil markers. To my suprise, I found using markers more fun than I was expecting. This is because I can use them over the pen without the pen being covered up, unlike the oil markers.
