Beautiful Oops

Tennis in the Rain

8'x12'

Watercolor and pen

The ideas that were visually evident within this piece are, the beautiful oops I was giving, my brother, Weston, and his love for playing the game tennis. I thought of this because the black blob looked like a tennis racket–it also had a peice to it that looked like an arm! So, I began thinking of sports that used a racket that looked like that, and table tennis, or tennis were the options. This obviously relates to my life because my whole childhood I grew up with my whole family playing tennis, and I played with Weston a lot in particular, so I could definitely picture him easily when I was drawing him.

For my materials, I began sketching with a 2b pencil because I wanted the sketch lines to be soft so that I could go over it and add color later without having stubborn dark sketch marks visible. I then used water color pens to fill in the clothes on Weston, as well as the ball he was playing with. I then began to brain storm how I could add to the blank white page space of my paper. I began thinking back to when we would be practicing in the rain and thought, that would be a perfect “base” or “ground” for Weston to be on, as he was playing in this air it looked like. So, I used the water color pens to create a puddle-looking ground and made his reflection in the water.

I began sketching his body, knowing that I wanted the body to be in motion. It took some thinking about how I was going to position his body around the tennis racket and forearm because I knew that i needed it all to match proportionally and realistically. My project evolved as I added details in the face, on his clothes, and under Weston to add other factors than just the tennis racket and a body. My next steps would be to think about what an even more specific background would be, and how I would made it blend with the puddle and water reflection I already have.
