Observational Drawing

Headshot

9 X 12

Pen and pencil

There is no story to this drawing because it is a still life of a plaster head, however, the reason I choose this head out of many others is because of the way the eyes were so large and round. I thought that this unique feature would be fun to draw. Another reason why I decided to draw this is because looking back at all my portraits and human artwork, I have never done a male's face before. So, once again, I thought it would be interesting to try something new, and learn how to draw a different facial structure.

To make this piece, I first began sketching out the basic forms of the face: a line halfway down the head for the eyes, the nose the width of the inner corners of the eyes, etc... After that, I began personalizing the features, after all, nobodies features fit the guidelines of the face. Once the sketch was the way I had hoped it would look like, I then began using a thin sharpie pen to define some of the areas with the most contrast.

This piece was basic in the way that to make it, I did not use any new or advanced techniques. So, in a sense, this piece was easy in the sense that I worked this tools that I am familiar with (pencils and pens), but, in a technical sense, this piece was difficult because I usually never do still lifes, or draw typical masculine features. In still lifes, I never knew how hard it can be to put down defining lines due to the fact that everything is 3D, with a 2D piece, it is much easier to understand where these defining lines can be placed. If I were to continue with this project, I would go back and fix the proportions on the head outline. It looks like this man has slept on one side of his face for too long.
