Wood

Looking up

For this piece, I really just wanted to show what someone would see when they look up through our circular tunnel vision. I was really inspired by nature for this piece and by fall with each tree only having a few leaves, and the ominous branches that remind me of halloween. This summer, I spent a lot of tijme backpacking with my sister, and a lot of the time we would sleep outside, not under our tent. It was the memory of all those nights under the starts, looking through the branches that lead me to create this peice.

Two make this piece, I frist started out with buying a 2ft diameter wood circle. I then used transfer paper to transfer the trees onto the wood so that I could begin burning in the trees along the lines that were copied on. After the trees were finished, I brushed mineral oil all over the surfce for a more finished look.

At frist, I was only going to do a drawing of a person holding a magnifying glass to her face, but after I finished that drawing, I did not really like it that much, and I have always wanted to try wood burning because I always see my sister using this medium, so I decided to give it a shot. I love this style of art because its similar to using pen in the sense that the contrast and black point will be very high. My next steps for this peice would be to add a moon, so that the onlooker can have more perspective relative to where they are, and I would also use a darker finish over the whole thing, or possibly even as a paint for some tree shadows or stars.
