Sustained Investigation #12

On the Edge

11' X 9'

Pencil

The main idea that guided this work was the idea of constantly being on the edge. You'll see that the peoples faces not fully present because they are almost peaking over the edge of the paper. Even though this is an in process photo, it is still able to to show two very different faces, one with an amused look, and the other with an almost bored and scary look in their eyes.

To create this piece, I used pencil. I am going to add oil pastel and more faces so that these faces correspond to my sustained investigaion one and two from 2D. I really loved how the oil pastel came out and those pieces so I am exited to use them on this piece as well. I feel like the oil pastel really make the eyes pop out which will be good for this piece because they are the main focus, and I feel like they are the one feature on a face they doesnt hide what a person is feeling.

Although this piece is not quite finsihed, I really struggles with the proportions of the face, considering how I could not use the basic proportions - like your eyes are half way down your face - because each face was slightly off the paper. Because of this, I was able to experiment and try other ways to see what looks proportionate. I felt like this was a good experience because I should not rely on the fundumental rules of the face because not all faces are perfectly proportionate.
