On a Bed Floating in Space

5.5' X 8.5'

Marker and Pen

For this piece, I really wanted to represent the isolation part that offen comes as a result of suffering from a mental illness. I feel like a lot of teens have a love/hate relashionship with their room: it is a place that brings both comfort but also isolation from the outside world. To really further this representation of isolation, I decided to make the bed floating in space to show the distance between the girl and her surrounding.

To create this piece I frist started with a very light simple sketch. From there I went in with a red marker and colored where all the shadows were. My original plan was to stop here, however, I decided to go in with the black pen to add more emphasis. With the black fine-point pen I was also able to add the smaller stars and planets. After this step I took light, pastel markers and added outlines the stars and blanket.

For this piece, I was really confused as to where to start. But, after doing research on all the different mental illnesses, a common theme for each was isolation. I feel that most teens whether they do or dont suffer from a mental illness deal with feeling isolated. After accumulating these ideas, I finally knew what I wanted to do.
