Review of the Maui Moisture brand and which products to avoid if you are CG
Maui Moisture appears to be an excellent brand for those adhering to the CG regimen; their lavish packaging emphasizes their all-natural components and absence of silicones, and their name is reminiscent of the trusted Shea Moisture brand. However, not all of their products are CG-friendly or even hair-friendly.
Is the entire line of Maui Moisture products CG Approved?
As mentioned previously, only a limited number of Maui Moisture products are Curly Girl approved. This guide is intended to assist you in determining which products are CG Friendly if you are attempting to avoid non-method approved products.
The Bottom Line: Is It Important That Maui Moisture Is Curly Girl Approved?
Some inquire, "Is Maui Moisture curly girl approved?" without addressing the more fundamental question, "Does it really matter?"
While it is true that many Maui Moisture brand products ARE curly girl approved, does this indicate that those that are not CG Friendly are harmful to your kinky or curly goodness? Not always.
Occasionally, obsessing over which natural hair care products are "curly girl friendly" or not can cause you to miss out on some incredible hair products and results. Experiment with things! This is essentially an oil combination in a spray bottle, which I was unaware of until I sprayed it liberally all over my damp curls in an attempt to "revive" them. I would not recommend that technique unless you want your hair to be soaked in oil – which, depending on your hair type and texture, you may very well want! Otherwise, apply this product to your hair as you would any oil: sparingly and with a concentration on extra-dry areas, such as your ends. Despite the name, I would not describe this Oil Mist as "weightless" or "light"!
To be honest, I don't use oil on my hair very often these days, and if I did, I'm not sure why I'd choose this spray over simple coconut or jojoba oil.
However, if you frequently utilize heat on your hair, you may find this spray handy. The directions recommend blow-drying your hair to allow the product to "infuse into your hair shafts," and I can see how this would help protect your hair and keep it smooth and shining despite the heat! After conditioning and detangling my hair with the Maui Moisture Nourish & Moisture Coconut Milk Conditioner, here is the result. It's not the most defined look (because to the lack of style products), but believe me when I say it feels soft and healthy.
There are incredible treatments for reversing shrinkage in 3C natural hair, enhancing the "POP" of 4C coils, and hydrating like a big dog!
Trying something that is not permitted by the curly girl technique is not the same as losing your virginity, sis!
If necessary, you can always return and reclaim your prized curly girl method approved status. Let us not make life so difficult for ourselves! The primary issue is that alcohol is a primary ingredient in their conditioners. It is unknown whether this is denatured or isopropyl alcohol, but it is a drying alcohol (as opposed to a fatty alcohol). I'm not sure why a brand that is so conscientious about their ingredients would use what is effectively rubbing alcohol in a conditioning product. The following is the email correspondence I had with them regarding this matter (the first picture in the album is the last email they sent). I'd steer clear of all Maui Moisture conditioners. Apart from that, the rest of the things are quite good.
I'd never used a Maui Moisture product before. I'm not sure why, considering their items are often in the store alongside Shea Moisture products, and they're always so reasonably priced. Maui Moisture shampoo and conditioner are routinely available for under $6 at drug shops, which is significantly less than the price of many other curly-haired brands. Additionally, their products are versatile enough to work on a variety of hair types, which is advantageous if you want to purchase a single product for your mixed-texture household.
I tested out the Maui Moisture Coconut Milk collection, which includes shampoo, conditioner, and an oil mist, to see what this brand is all about.
Coconut is the star ingredient in these items. Not only one type of coconut, but coconut water (as opposed to normal ionized water), coconut oil, and coconut extract as well. Each product is designed specifically for dry hair and is ultra-hydrating, containing aloe vera juice, guava seed oil, and mango seed butter
I used these items for a week to determine their effectiveness on my 3b curls.
Microcrystalline wax is used in all of their masks, the Curl smoothie, and the Curl milk. Because wax is not water soluble, it is technically not CG; therefore, I would avoid these products if you are only cowashing. You may be able to use these and avoid buildup if you use a low poo or sulfate-free cleanser, but YMMV.
To begin, let us discuss the fragrance. Each of these products smells divinely coconutty, so if you're a coconut lover, you're in for a treat. It's not terribly synthetic-smelling, but the aroma does linger all day.
Because I only wash my hair once a week, I only got to try this shampoo once. The shampoo has a white and milky consistency and is sulfate-free, but it does foam up. The shampoo appears to be ultra-moisturizing, with aloe vera juice, coconut water, guava seed oil, and mango butter, but it fell short for my 3b curls. It left my roots slightly parched, but nothing that a little conditioner couldn't fix. On the plus side, my scalp felt clean as a whistle. Their shampoos are excellent in my opinion. They're dense and hydrating, to the point where I can even detangle them. They are mostly composed of non-irritating, low-lather cleansers. Tightly Curly does not recommend sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, one of the cleansing ingredients used (the same one found in OGX shampoos), purely due to the fact that there are too many conflicting reports regarding how drying it actually is. Personally, I've had no issues with this ingredient. Additionally, the shampoos contain sodium chloride, which is essentially salt and can be drying, but it is listed as a very minor ingredient.
Maui Moisture Curl Quench & Others Are Not Curly Girl Approved
The beautiful Maui Moisture Curl Quench line is one of the product lines that really hurts a kinky-curly girl's feelings...
Because, with the exception of one product (the Maui Moisture Curl Quench Coconut Oil Shampoo), none of the products in this line are curly girl approved.
Maui Moisture offers a variety of product lines, but the Curl Quench line is designed specifically for frizzy, unruly hair with its fusions of rich coconut oil, creamy papaya butter, and plumeria extract.
Although these Curl Quench products are not CGM-approved, buyer reviews rave about how this natural hair care product helps hydrate, smooth, and eliminate frizz from your curls while enhancing softness and body for the bomb 3C to 4C kinky curly hairstyles.
Their detangler and blow out mist are both CG-friendly, though I have not personally used them. Additionally, their oil mists and raw oils are CG approved and, in my experience, are excellent lightweight oils for my fine hair.
Additionally, I wanted to address the claim that they do not conduct animal testing. Johnson and Johnson own Maui Moisture. Thus, while they may not conduct animal testing, their parent company does, which many people interpret as a sign that the company is not cruelty-free.
When I think of this conditioner, the word "luscious" comes to mind. The scent is identical to that of super-coconut, and the consistency is rich and creamy. I frequently wet and condition my hair in the shower without shampooing it to rehydrate and shape my curls, and this product was ideal for that. It's silky enough to work through my curls easily, and it's inexpensive enough that I didn't feel guilty about using a lot of it. A few palmfuls of this combined with my handy Wet brush equals effortless detangling sessions!
Additionally, this conditioner leaves my hair so smooth that I was suspicious that it contained silicones, but none are listed in the ingredients list. It must be the coconut's enchantment!
