Notes:

Johann Martin Sheets, often referred to as Martin, was born in Hoenigstein, Germany in 1735. He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the age of 18. The attached passenger list documents his arrival with his wife, Anna Elisabeth Bens. They settled in Blue Ridge Mountains in Ashe County, NC. The settlement is known as the Sheets Gap in the community of Laurel Springs. Martin is listed in the first U.S. census (1790). His son, Andrew Sheets, originated the Sheets family cemetery in this area in the 1800s. It is believed but not proven that Martin was buried there in an unmarked grave.

There are hundreds of family trees that have erroneously attached Mary Hoover/Huber (1793-1894) as his wife. She was actually married to Martin Sheets (1787-1850) (Martin Sheets).
