John Henry was probably born in the late 1600's in Scotland. He and his wife Elizabeth owned a farm and other property in Johnson, RI which later became part of Providence, RI. In August, 1732 the Providence Town Council approved a license for John to operate a Tavern. Again in August, 1733 the council met and the record states "It is further vited and ordered that Richard Waterman, the Clerk shall or may in behalf of the council: Grant and sign a license to ---John Henry--- to keep a Tavern or Ale house in Thier house where they now dwell until 18 day of August next ensueng: or to any of them that shall appear to take it: for sum of forty shillings each license."

His name on some records in 1738 was spelled "Hennery" and "Henery" and he was called "Yeoman."

The will of John Henry of Providence, RI was dated April 1, 1752. In it he left his home farm to be equally divided between William and Samual, another 100 acre tract to James and John, 100 pounds to his daughter Elizabeth McGonegal and " To wife Elizabeth Henry, the best room in the dwelling house...one third of the homestead farm during her widowhood...but if she marries again she is to be fully quit of the house and farm..."
