He enlisted in Co. D. 47th Ill Infantry Aug. 6, 1861, serving 3 years and 2 months, when he was honorably discharged from the Army.

He was married at Condon (sic Corydon) Iowa, Jan. 19, 1865, to Miss Sarah Hatfield an to this union 9 children were born, only little Nettie preceding him in death, of the 8 living all are married but his son B. B.

They lived on a farm in Missouri one year, then moved back to Iowa where they lived four years, moving again to Chilcothe, Mo., living there nine years when they came to Kansas in the year 1879, settling on a homestead 1 1/2 miles South of Palco where they lived about 20 years.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, four daughters, Mrs. Etta Littlefield, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Ora Leck, Luray, Ks., Mrs. Dora Tawney, Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Frona Frederick, Salina, Kans., four sons, B. B., J. W., J. E. and W. F. all of Palco, Kan. 32 grandchildren, besides 2 brothers, Frank Bomgardner of Decatur, Ill., Albert B. Doniphan, Neb., 2 sisters, Mrs. Bell Lee, Palco, Kan., Mrs. Libbie Seigler, Houston, Texas, two half brothers and one half sister who all reside at Powersville, Mo. Of this 32 grandchildren all were present but one, James W. Littlefield of Chicago.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. Neal, Pastor of the Saints Church at Norton, assisted by Rev. Nixon, of Natoma, Rev. Davis of Palco and the body was laid to rest in the Pleasant View Cemetery, the pall bearers all being Sons of Veterans.

In speaking of his pastorate at Palco many years ago, Rev. Nixon said that there were so few workers here then that he often became discouraged but Bro. Bomgardner was ever ready with words of encouragement and in fact the editor as well.

As many others were often uplifted by this active Bible student who never seemed to tire of telling what Christ had done for humanity he heard the voice from Heaven saying, "Blessed is the dead that die in the Lord" and not everyone who should be taken so suddenly from their earthly home could feel so sure of hearing their master voice, "Well Done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of they Lord."
