TECH Vocabulary

Batten- a wood or metal pipe from which stage lights, drops, and scenery are hung.

Electric- a batten with electric devices on it (lights etc...)

Ellipsoidal- instrument that uses an ellipsoidal reflector

Fresnel- a lighting instrument using a Fresnel lens

Strip light- a strip of sockets in a single fixture

Scoop- flood life using large scoop-shaped reflector

Circuit- the area where electricity flows

Dimmer- a device used to control how much voltage is supplied to a lighting fixture.

Control channel- controls one lighting instrument

Sub master-

Cross fader- a control for fading from one preset scene to another.

c-clamp-

twist nut- adjusts the twist of the lighting instrument

yoke- handle of a lighting instrument

yoke nut- adjusts the tilt of the yoke

housing- the metal structure that encloses a lighting instrument

guts- the internal part of a lighting instrument responsible for connecting the lamp.

barrel-

shutter- modifies the shape of light cast by the instrument

gobo- thin metal template with a pattern punched out attached to a lighting inst. to create patterned or textured lighting effects

Lamp- source of light in lighting instrument
