Spanish

Here are several resources to give your students some beginning Spanish vocabulary. Print copies of the "Beginning Spanish Hand-out" for all students and the teacher. Many of the vocabularies and songs have worksheets for the student to illustrate. These worksheets aid in understanding and learning. Instead of saying "red is rojo," the teacher can point to the illustration of red and say simply "rojo." The class repeats "rojo." In this way they are connecting the idea directly with the Spanish word. Some of the songs, such as "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" lend themselves to hand motions, which is another way to connect the Spanish vocabulary directly to the idea.

The vocabulary worksheets can also be printed and illustrated by the students for use in matching games. Simply make two sets and cut them along the lines to make cards for "Concentration." Though the students' worksheets will be identical, young students also enjoy playing a non-competitive game of Bingo with them as well.

In the "Beginning Spanish Handout" and "Bible Verses and Songs in Spanish," the literal translations of several songs are provided. The purpose is to show the differences in word order and grammar rules in Spanish. The handout called "More Bible Verses and the Lord's Prayer in Spanish" is more advanced and does not have the literal translation of the verses. Rather, the verse in English is given.

Another fun tool is our blank Bingo board which can be used to review new Spanish vocabulary. The teacher assigns the new Spanish words and the students write them randomly on the board. Next, the teacher calls out the English meaning of the word and the students use pennies or other markers to play Bingo.

Finally, a grammar section is included for students who are studying Spanish more formally. You will find a variety of blank forms that can be used to create your own Spanish Grammar Notebook.
