Haiku infinite Substitution is when a word or phrase is replaceable to change meaning whilst at the same time maintaining a constant underlying formal structure. As always, each of the substitutions may have several optional grammatical spins. For example: A Noun can also be a verb; as in a shadow (shape cast by light's absence behind an intrusive object), or to shadow (follow).
Here are some examples of extreme substitution where each of the three lines in a Imagist minimalism tercet (3-liner brief poem) can be changed in various combinations:
A more figurative example of infinite substitution:
dog day afternoon
even the cat
sweats
the dog day afternoon template would look like this:
EXAMPLE TEMPLATE
dog day afternoon
even the _______
_______
WORKING EXAMPLES
dog day afternoon
even the lunatics
stop
dog day afternoon
even the wind
stays home
dog day afternoon
even the tap
drips,
We can extend to a complete substitution which pivots on one preposition ('even the'):
EXAMPLE TEMPLATE
_______
even the _______
_______
WORKING EXAMPLES
Moon of Flowers
even the hoody
looks out
here comes Mrs Farmer
even the crows
just carry on
why not?
even the daisies
are shut
Each of the last few quick examples can be subjected to infinite substitution. Let's use the Moon of Flowers (a June moon title, one of many). This time we will only use a single infinite substitution of object noun in line two (L-2):
EXAMPLE TEMPLATE
Moon of Flowers
even the _______
looks out
Have a go . . .
IMPORTANT NOTE
See this item for an explanation of Literary Haiku and its variants. The method outlined in this post here is more of an
exercise in haiku technique possibilities than a recommended methodology for genuinely inspired work.
