Rather than switch to my other PC to dig out an old copy of Photoshop someone gave me once upon a time and which I've never really used, one browsed online for a FREE equivalent, To our delight Gimpshop turned up. I already have the standard Gimp, so this was nice to discover. It's user interface emulates Photoshop. However, whereas Photoshop is complicated to use and has a steep learning curve, the Gimpshop is the opposite. This is why we give a high tick.

Adobe Photoshop Express
Adobe actually has a free web based photo editor of their own. It has all the basic functionality you’d expect as well as a few advanced features (sadly though, no layers), and interfaces well with a number of photo sharing websites. Again, completely cross platform. [Thanks to Daniel Shain for the headsup.]

Photoscape does what Instagram does and much, much more. It's my
main photo editor since it was downloaded to test a few weeks ago.
Very handy and friendly utility. Free!
