At birth we all emerge in our baby suits and, for a while, flourish
in the material world. Then, as all things surely come to pass, we
discard our utility clothing and become whatever we were before --
perhaps enhanced.
Between the sweet pastures and the pie factory our edible creatures
live in a paradise on earth here in rural England (and, for the most
part, everywhere else on the planet). Of course, between the two
eternities, many creatures suffer in the modern industrial farming
technologies. But then, so do we all, here in the valley of shadows.
Life is clearly encapsulated in a ring of fire so that we survive
during transit without undue damage to our kit. However, betwixt
womb and tomb this epidermis of fear is mostly luminous with the
joyful miracle of simply being alive.
In a sense we are all food being eaten by food.
This was an ancient teaching.
All I can say for sure, though, is that I don't mind the cost and,
for the most part, I'd say neither do these Charolais calves that
are being fattened up by the local farmer. For, without his labours
to feed the people these creatures would have never enjoyed their
moments in the sun in the first place. Good bless 'em.
Workshopped and improved (or optioned) -- will ponder this.

"Uninterrupted sentences. Yes, they can work. Why not? The important thing is to deliver an inner experience in virtual sensate form (little dream in ma). Better to have standalone segments though (3 in a tercet), on the whole. I'd recommend that for the aesthetics of the form and smooth delivery of the dream elements. However, is there really such a thing as an uninterrupted sentence? At the micro-levels we deal with in the extreme and intense brevity of a haiku the gaps are everywhere in action. Between the lines, before and after the lines, not to mention the gaps between individual words and lesser units of sonic division. A haiku is percolated with dream-space of ma. Especially noticeable in spoken haiku. You may not have thought about this before. Think about it now." - The Haiku Scientist

BACKSTORY
Having slaved over a hot stove all day I have come to realise the value (yet again) of focus in the kitchen. At one point I went to the front door chewing a slice of slightly undercooked parsnip. The piece that was tough (a section of the core) was spat out regardless of public approbation (so, to that extent, I blew my cover). Swift as the wind a young sparrow appeared out of nowhere and flew off with it. How on earth did it react so quickly? How did it -- in a split second -- know the small piece of parsnip was an edible item? Then the thought came that the young sparrow knew it was edible in the same way that a pine tree instructs the open-hearted seer. Probably based on instantaneous quantum perception.

Periscopes. There's more to this than a whimsy. You see, I have it on good authority that nature is wonderful and that the universe is stranger than we can ever imagine. Yes, periscopes. Definitely maybe. Operated by individual fairies using levers.

My theory is that cats come from outer space. The only question being is are they simply tourists, or are they spies on a covert mission beyond human comprehension. Scientists need to pay much more attention to what cats are really up to. Trouble is that cats occupy high places and funding is probably restricted. Some say that scientists who have done private research in the past have disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

Little brown mushrooms (LBMs)? Well, there's a squildillian (I claim this as a neologism - a new word) varieties of the little blighters. Even mushroom scientists get perplexed. So, we call 'em 'little brown mushrooms', 'LBMs' or 'little browns' (at least I do), to er, cover the ground. ^_^ Although it's summer here in England the weather has been exceptionally wet for weeks. I guess the mushrooms are fooled into thinking it must be autumn, or autumn is periscoping to do a rain check. [see previous post - up the page a few clicks]

a swift martin makes me duck
but the littlest Charolais
just larks about
If this haiku of mine is allowed to visualise, a reader may experience what I experienced yesterday evening. It was a lovely piece of natural theatre. Me leaning on a farmer's gate I've recently found and watching the sun slide away. There were a couple of larger Charolais (my favourite cattle) and this little one. The bigger ones were calmly grazing the earth in their cloud coloured skins and the littlest of the three started running around, gambling like a lamb, almost. I tranced out into this amusing vignette and then, suddenly, a swift house martin whizzed to part my hair. I ducked instinctively, like you do. ^_^ Then, felt a bit sheepish for letting a small bird freak me unawares. All the while that little bovine was frolicking here and frolicking there. Lovely. So, this is my haiku diary entry which will allow me to replay a documentary of that charming moment, at will, and this for for years and years to come...and maybe then some - in another place.
NOTE
Technically we could call this offering a haiku. It delivers an inner vision and is seasonally calibrated with two contrasting images leading to a punchline. Normally, when words interrupt vision delivery we are not doing the haiku basics properly. However, in this case the words are part of the fun. Frankly, I would simply regard this tercet micropoem as an amusing play of words in three brief lines and leave it at that.
