Creating a character is the first part of the game, and one of the most important. The whole idea of roleplaying is to take the part of another person — a “character” that you create. The usual way to create a character is to design him just as though he is a character in a story you are writing. Start by deciding what type of person you want to be. You can take your inspiration from a fictional hero or heroine or create your new “self” from the ground up. Once you have some idea what sort of person you want to play, it’s time to bring him to life! A “character story” is the history of a game character, written by the person who plays that character. This is a great aid to roleplaying. You may even want to write the story first (or at least some of it), and then work out your character’s actual characteristics. A story can really help bring your character to life. You don’t have to do it at creation, but it’s recommended since you will need a properly constructed description and background to progress past level 10.
So you want to make a character for Distant realms do you? Well first lets get a few of the more common questions out of the way. To start a character all you need is to Join our Discord above, speak with Joshua Fields. He will give you a Template and assist in the basics of setting up your character. We no longer use a Forum to host our character pages.
Congratulations you have the very beginnings of a character, now continue on reading below to continue finishing the details!
Feel free to follow the order of the following below. You may find it easier. :)
The first thing that you would need to figure out besides the personality is your gender, as mentioned above is your Race and Class. Some Advanced Classes can be chosen at creation provided you meet their requirements, so you could look at those as well. Figuring these out, may assist with you figuring out a name that you want for your character. As most names are related to their race! Do take your time on choosing your race and class, we at Distant Realms have a much more to choose from. If you have a character idea in your head but can't decide. Reach out to the DMs in the Discord, they may be able to assist you in choosing.
We won't lie to you, figuring out a name will be one of the hardest things to do when creating a character. Specially since this world isn't exactly our own, and as a result isn't filled with traditional names, occasionally a human would carry a normal name but many of the aliens in this database use very unusual naming patterns, its suggestible that you do some research into the life form you plan to play. Here at Distant Realms, we do provide a large amount of information however due to various reasons some information is omitted, the naming structure of a race may or may not have been placed in the database, so let the google monster loose and perhaps with a bit of brain grease you'll come up with something that will be remembered for years to come, something silly however might not garnish a lot of attention from the men and women who spend time here, its really hard to be serious during a sexual scene when your character's name is Doctor Cumbucket.
Well now, lets take a look at your character you now have a vague idea of what you want, so its time to flesh it out a bit,
Lets choose a birth date for it in Birthsigns (you will need to be in OOC in F-List to use the Dice. Search in open rooms "Distant" and you should see our channel)
and then your alignment, [Paths of Alignment] It is recommended you actually read the descriptions as it uses a unique system.
Next we need to allot your stats, each player is given a set of pre-rolled stats to keep things equal among everyone
Pre Rolled dice for all players to maintain balance all players gain: 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8 with an Attribute Threshold at level one equaling 22. Keep in mind you may want to match your highest abilities scores to what your class will use the most. Example Physical Combat classes may want higher Strength, where as magic users may want higher Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma
As the character ages, his or her physical ability scores decrease and his or her mental ability scores increase, as detailed on Table: Aging Effects.
Table: Age Modifiers (with Terran human approximations) The effects of each aging step are cumulative.
If in an earlier age category moving forward, the bonus and penalties are replaced, they don't stack.
Regardless of race, aging effects occur, this includes artificial life and forsaken, only exception to the aging mechanics are artificial means, such as a character who might have been immune to the negative effects of aging suddenly losing the ability due to level drain.
Adult Situations:
Even though we are playing on F-List. Due to laws of many of some of the Creators. All sexual scenes will require your Character to be 16+. If found to be Roleplaying with a character under that age and in a Sexual Scene, you may be removed from the servers.
Alcohol:
The Legal Drinking age of the Palman Imperium is 16! (Adult) [or applicable for your race]
HP: Race & Class Wound Modifiers + Con
Control: Race & Class Control Modifiers (No Control Bonus unless the necessary feat is acquired)
Control is the umbrella term for all energy types used to activate abilities, spells, and special techniques. Whether a character's energy is called Mana, Aether, Chakra, or something else, it is mechanically treated as 'control' for calculation purposes. However you are more than welcome to call your characters source of power as you please during roleplay scenarios and the like.
Sanity: Wisdom SCORE (Not Modifier) x 4
Sanity must be healed in RP and is tracked very carefully.
*Hit Points, Control, and Sanity are always set to their maximum values (for both characters and monsters) upon creation; original roll values are kept only for reference. For example, a 1d10 becomes a flat 10.
Party Abilities:
Every Character regardless of Species acquires a "Party Ability +1 Point" meaning check the PARTY ABILITIES under the Skill Page.
Every 1 Point = 4 ranks.. So if you have Etiquette (CHA) with 1 point and you have a CHA modifier of +2. You have a +6 Total to Etiquette checks.
Traits: 3 Slots — Purchased with Skill Points
Defects: Up to 5 Slots — May grant bonuses ( Traits & Defects )
Traits represent advantages. Defects are flaws, yet a clever player can make them strengths.
You have 3 Trait slots and up to 5 Defect slots (unless the DM allows more).
Traits cost Skill Points, while Defects grant Skill Points.
You may only gain one Feat or Talent from Defects.
There is no restriction on the amount of skills points you can from chose Defects.
Some high-impact Traits and Defects may grant a bonus Feat—these must be written into your character’s backstory (These are required by to be written in by level 10 and selection may also need Dm Approval).
Let's look through those here [Feats] It is suggested you carefully choose your starting feats, as some feats cannot be taken after level 1.
Give everything a double check, fill in your starting credits (14,000 or 18,000 check class page), armor and weapon proficiency and other misc. info that is empty. Then you can send it to a staff member on the following systems:
Discord (Role: DR Management)
F-List [Search DistantRealms] (Moderators/Owner)
While you wait for a reply you can join us on F-List: Search "DistantRealm" and click the result. If you have issues with F-list Let a member of staff on Discord know. Introduce your character to us, we are eager to meet him/her or sometimes It. Our players will be glad to show you around our world. If you have questions feel free to ask another player, if they don't know the answer then just wait for one of the DM's to appear and ask them, but please, the GM's are busy so if you think it would be something we the players can answer then ask them, below the image is a leveling outline for reference.
