The Tholians are asexual crystalline entities who live in very hot environments and temporarily assume a gender when mating and for the three years spent raising their offspring. They are not native to the Milky Way Galaxy, but once dominated their native galaxy, which Humans call M81.
The Tholians were overthrown in a Seltorian-led galaxy wide revolt. However, a small group of Tholians escaped the Seltorian Revolt and brought their “planet”, which was
a provincial capital and a small Dyson Sphere (i.e., a huge hollow structure with a small artificial star inside), with them.
It took nearly 200 years for these Tholians to travel to our galaxy. Most Tholians still live in their Dyson Sphere and now consider it their homeworld in the Alpha/Beta Quadrant region.
The Dyson Sphere’s interior environmental conditions are detailed under the description of the homeworld below. If Tholians have to interact in person with other species, they use special environmental suits.
Homeworld: Class-T, Gravity 0.88G, Atmospheric pressure

Physical Description:
The Tholians are a crystalline species with an outer carapace through which a fluid can be seen circulating murkily. Other distinguishing features are the faceted mantis-like heads where two triangular eyes can be seen.
Carapace
It’s been noted that in every confirmed Tholian sighting that the mysterious species were encased in an outer carapace similar to those seen on Terran insects but with the exception of it being made completely of crystal which was similar to quartz. This crystal carapace was a natural product of Tholian biology protects them from harmful forms of radiation native to their homeworld: A Class Y Demon world, However, it is known that the carapace explosively disintegrates when a killing blow was dealt on a Tholian such as those experienced by low-temperature plasma. This made it difficult for the humanoids to study these carapaces as they were typically destroyed or badly damaged upon the Tholian's death.
There are a number of abilities that the carapace provides its user, such as a natural Damage Reduction that absorbs impacts made upon it from either kinetic or energy attack as well as provides an accelerated response rate for the Tholian. Furthermore, the carapace projects an image of itself that’s slightly offset from reality which affects the Tholian’s perception by other races, providing it a defensive advantage. Another noted trait from the carapace was its ability to filter out all forms of poisons from the air and water sources around it with speculation being made that it might serve as a rebreather in order to provide a steady flow of chlorine-methane compound to the Tholian.
Finally, the crystal carapace provides its user the capacity to remotely access for any system on its ship which cannot be blocked by known technology.
They also appeared to possess the capacity to pass their knowledge from one generation to the next through a form of crystal memory upload. This allowed newly-matured Tholians to continue the works of their predecessors with minimal level of learning required. This was believed to had been the source of the famed Tholian punctuality.
The Tholians possessed a form of networked intelligence in addition to their sentience as individuals which almost made it appear as if they had a hive intellect. Whilst they did share their memories between generations or familial structures, the process did not create a “hive mind”. In addition, the Tholian in question was capable of choosing whom they wished to share their memories.
Personality: Unknown.
NPC Species Traits

Tholians require a 400°F living environment;
Oxygen is considered a toxin to the Tholians. If Tholians are somehow exposed to an oxygen environment, they lose all bonuses to their Defense and DR. In addition, they will lose 2 points of Constitution per minute until they are returned to their natural environment; at that time their Constitution points will return at the their normal rate of healing.
Tholians also have a native immunity to all diseases that are of an organic nature, regardless if they are Dextro or Levo protein based.
