THE RED SHOES

I saw her standing on the stage

A girl of very tender age

And as the music starts to play

A gentle swirl with skirt displayed

As she danced a silence came

An audience wrapt was clearly plain

The feet above the floor, it seemed

As she danced on, as if in a dream

The people looked, a quiet hush

While on the stage the feet to rush

As if the time is running short

That she should soon have to abort

She dances on, this pretty maid

Before the lights will surely fade

The music yet to reach its peak

As she dances on with nimble feet

The dance has ended, the music done

The audience now have had their fun

It's only then I hear the beat

And note red shoes upon her feet.
