A Day in the Life of an Ant

“ ‘morning Sam”

“ ‘morning Baz”

“What’s new?”

“Same old, same old!”

“Heard about Tony wanting to take over the nest?”

“Doesn’t he know only a Queen can lead the nest….still these days some ants think they can do whatever they want…you know ‘blended families’ and all. Still wouldn’t want to live in his nest if he did take over”

“Yeh! Hey another thing happened the other day – some clowns wanted to knock down the fig trees down the road….don’t they know all the good food sources they provide….we’d be worse off if that happens”

“Don’t worry, I don’t think they could make up their minds if their lives depended on it, and anyway their teeth wouldn’t be sharp enough to do the job and strong as we ants are I don’t see them with the strength to lift the trees out”

“Yeh! Guess you’re right”

“Well what have you got on today?”

“Thought I’d wander down to the paddock next door and scout around for a feed down there…I hear tell from Carmel there’s been some good pickings to be had”

“Sounds good I might come with you, got to keep the food up to those hungry little aphids”

“Yeh well if we want to eat some of their sweet sugars and share with the rest of the nest we’d better get at it…no good standing around here all day”

“Mind you Bruce said he had a good thing going where he could get some beaut discounts at some place he’s been going”

“Where was that?”

“Some domain not far from here”

“Is it doing the nest any good?”

“Seems to be, called in some help and brought home a mouse the other day. Didn’t that cause a stir!”

“Yeh! Nev got stuck in pulling it apart straight away and he had a good crew helping him – didn’t take them long before they had in bits they could handle. Man, the nest was happy with that when they got it back.”

“Carolyn wanted to ‘enhance’ the whole thing and finished up doing her ‘favourites’ and cropped it down some more. Turned out pretty good too!”

“Graham was there to lend a hand – things go along pretty smoothly when there’s plenty of help.”

“Yeh!”

“We had some new trainees in the other day and Jack got them running around getting into focus and told them they had to practice, practice, and more practice if they wanted to be good little ants and perfect their skills. They all seemed to take it onboard. The weather wasn’t very nice – a bit of rain which made things difficult but Jack’s a trooper and braved the wet regardless to get the job done.”

“Well enough of this nattering, we’d better get on with it….Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it’s off to work we go!”
