This course will use the mid-20th Century Space Race as a theme to unite subject matter from Social Studies, English, Mathematics, and Science. Students will study the race from Sputnik in 1956 to the Apollo moon landing in 1969, and then continue on to the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station, and current efforts to develop a mission to Mars. The course will combine traditional class work with a project-based approach to combine multiple subjects across disciplines. Coursework will combine reading historical nonfiction literature of the space race as well as other media, historical research and writing, scientific explorations and laboratory experiments, and mathematical calculations to understand the complexities of the space race in its full context.
