Nursing Assistant is a three-credit class designed to prepare students for entry-level jobs in nursing homes and other healthcare facilities and introduces concepts of basic human needs, health/illness, and basic nursing skills. Skills are demonstrated in a supervised laboratory setting and a clinical environment. The nursing assistant will be able to perform tasks related to patient/resident care and support nursing care. Clinical experience in a nursing home is included.
Nursing Assistant introduces concepts of basic human needs and teaches basic nursing skills that will be demonstrated and practiced in the laboratory setting. This course focuses on personal care, nutrition/feeding, elimination, clean and safe environment, communication, vital signs, body mechanics, death and dying, and principles related to long-term care. Upon successful completion of the classroom/lab studies, the student will participate in a clinical experience caring for the geriatric client. Background study checks will be conducted.
Successful students will be eligible to take the Nurse Aide Competency Examination for certification and placement on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. This course meets the application requirements for the MN West nursing program.
Notes: This course is a collaborative effort between RTR High School, Avera Tyler Healthcare Center, and Minnesota West. The course will be held at the Avera Tyler Healthcare Center and clinical experiences will take place at the Avera Tyler Nursing Home. The class will likely start earlier than the normal school day (approximately 7:45 am) and last one hour. Students will be expected to arrive at the high school's main campus in time for 2nd period. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the class. We need 10 students to offer this class.
