Soccer season this year is filled with new things; a new field, new players, and a new coach. The new front field is great and everyone on the soccer team loves it! Last year it was like playing on concrete, but the new turf is softer and doesn’t hurt as much when you go down to make a tackle or if someone shoves you over; it’s safer than the old field.
In addition to the new field, this soccer season we also have a new coach, Stroh. He does so much for the team that we take for granted, like scouting other games, doing film sessions, and making tactics for each team we play. Every practice he has us do 10 minutes of conditioning to stay ahead of our competitors and we’ll work on set plays off of corners and throws. The season was off to a rough start, but after getting used to new players and some new formations/positions, we started to win more games. Big rivalry games this year were against Mahwah and Westwood. Unfortunately, we lost both times to Mahwah, but fought hard against Westwood and came out on top. When I say it was war, I’m not exaggerating. It was a super physical game, but everyone on the team gave 100% effort throughout the whole 80 minutes and we came together as a team to beat the competition. We needed to critically think about our strengths and take responsibility for areas of improvement. I’d say that would have to be our biggest success this year so far because we just came off a tough loss in a county game, turned our mindsets around, and won against a really good, not to mention physical, team which gave a big chance to win the league. With each passing game we adapted to our opponents style of play and implemented various set plays. However, it was not only this which made us successful, but how we came together and supported each other.
Participating in a sport makes me feel apart of the school community and helped me learn different things, like adapting when going against different opponents and learning how to play with new teammates every year. Ramsey student athletes learn to collaborate and communicate with each other, as well as taking responsibility for actions they have on and off the field, which each graduate of Ramsey aspires to attain.
