One of our four major district goals is Enhancing the Student Experience. This academic year, as part of working toward this goal, we will continue our work to build a caring, inclusive school community. When students feel safe, supported, and valued, they can grow academically, build healthy relationships, and develop key social and emotional skills such as empathy, which we we have targeted in our Profile of a Ramsey Graduate.
One of our students, Tyler Hornidge, was nominated for, and trained to become a Tyler Clementi Foundation Representative. The Foundation's goal is to spread awareness about the power and influence words and actions can have on another, and encourage students to be an upstander. The Tyler Clementi Foundation’s (TCF) works to end online and offline bullying in schools, workplaces, and faith communities. The Foundation’s proactive and positive action approach that is centered on systemic change directly relates to our learning community’s emphasis on fostering a culture that demonstrates strength through unity and empowers all members to be Upstanders who take a stand against bullying from #Day1.
On February 19th, Mrs. Clementi (Tyler's mother) visited RHS to speak to our students about cyberbullying, the transition to college, acceptance of others, treating each other with respect, doing the right thing, and the importance of mental health. Every student was given the opportunity to hear her words, and reflect on her messaging the next day in our Physical Education/Wellness as they signed the Tyler Clementi Foundation's #Day 1 pledge to be an Upstander. We are looking forward to continuously following up on the themes of Mrs. Clementi for the rest of the school year as we continuously work to elevate the standard of Ramsey High School.
In addition, Tyler Hornidge worked with us to invite local school representatives and as a result we were able to have a thoughtful dialog between students and educators from a variety of schools. This dialog was featured in an article written by Marsha Stoltz in The Record . We strive to work with students to create an atmosphere in our learning community where everyone learns both with and from each other and this day was a great example of these efforts.
