Band camp is instrumental in the success of the Ramsey High School Big Blue marching band. During the second week of August, the band was at the high school from 7am to 9pm learning the music and drill, or movements around the field, to our 2018 show “To The Moon and Back.” Not only is it where we learn the bulk of our show, but it is where we come together as a team, setting the stage for the season to come. Band camp is a time for us to welcome freshmen to Ramsey High School, encouraging them to ask questions and get situated to life at RHS. Through sectionals and games such as the staff versus student volleyball game, bonds are formed between Big Blue members of all grades and instruments.
Whether out on the turf learning marching technique or in the school rehearsing music, we work hard to set the tone for the rest of the competition season. Band camp helps us set a strong foundation, as we learn a significant portion of our show. We become comfortable and confident with each other. Essentially, we become a team all working towards a common goal. It’s incredible to see the improvement in all members from the beginning of camp to the end. This is especially true for the freshmen, who come knowing nothing and leave with a week’s worth of marching band under their belts. Band camp is when the band becomes more than a group of people playing instruments and marching; we become a family.
