Gen21 is beginning its fourth year as a club here at Ramsey High School. Gen21, also known as Gender Equality Now 21st Century, is a club whose mission is exactly what its name states: to promote equality regardless of gender identity, and to think deeply about how we are impacted by, and how we can impact our society. Gen21 meets once a month and has a variety of meeting types. Meetings vary between focussing on an education and discussion-based itinerary, and working on larger projects as a club.
This year, Gen21’s discussions will likely focus on females in politics, women’s health, transgender rights, toxic masculinity, and any other issues of concern. We come up with our discussions by looking at current events and seeing what our members are interested in talking about. In these discussions, members have the opportunity to communicate their ideas and collaborate on small-scale solutions.
We also are working toward larger goals such as charity events and field trips. One charity event members have expressed interest in is the Oasis Mother’s Day Gift Drive. For this event, which we have organized for two years now, we ask Ramsey High School students and staff members to donate small, unused Mother’s Day gifts, which Gen21 collects and puts into individualized gift bags to be sent to a women’s shelter in Patterson, New Jersey for their Mother’s Day Celebration. We are also planning a field trip to the Women of the World Summit in New York this coming April.
This club is open for everyone to join, as you do not need prior experience or knowledge to understand or participate in what we discuss. If students have conflicts at certain points in the year, they are still welcome any time they have an open space in their schedule. More committed members of Gen21 will have opportunities to work in leadership positions for bigger projects. If students are interested in joining the club, they can reach out to the Gen21 advisor, Mrs. Altiero, or the co-presidents, Nicole Braun and Margaux Bouniol.
