Bobby Taylor, Class of 2021
Consisting of 9th through 12th graders, the Robotic Rams is for people who are interested in taking their interests in engineering a step further. Founded in 2015 by a group of students passionate about robotics, the team educates members about topics such as the design process and proper documentation techniques for building robots.
Although the Robotic Rams is technically a club, the team competes in many robotics competitions throughout Bergen County. While competitions are chaotic and stressful at times, they offer students a chance to think on their feet and put their STEM knowledge to the test as they compete using robots. Such competitions also help to foster collaboration between schools, as teams are required to work with other teams through alliances in order to complete objectives in matches.
At the Robotic Ram’s most recent tournament, the team was a member of the winning alliance which won in the finals, which was a highlight of many member’s seasons. The team was also nominated for, but ultimately did not receive, the motivate award, an award bestowed upon teams that reach out to their local STEM community to encourage engagement in STEM. Unfortunately, the Robotic Rams did not advance to the state level; however, the team hopes to advance at the Bergen League Tournament on February 23rd.
Personally, I participate as the Captain of the Robotic Rams because I enjoy learning about STEM topics such as odometry, PID, and control theory, as well as the basics of building robots. I joined the Robotic Rams as a Freshman, and stayed because I have found that the team offers a great environment for students who are interested in learning outside of the classroom.
The Robotic Rams does an exemplifies the Profile of a Ramsey Graduate as members are expected to take responsibility for various functions of the robot, as well as creativity, innovation, and collaboration as members are expected to work together to come up with new ideas for how to perform tasks using the robot.
