Behind the Scenes of Ramsey High School’s First Food Truck Event

Running Ramsey High School’s first ever Food Truck event was definitely not a walk in the park. Although it thankfully ran smoothly on May 3rd, 2019 and provided stressed students with a mental-health awareness day to relax with friends, the event took a large amount of pre-planning. As members of the Sophomore Class of 2021 Student Council, we were each responsible for attending meetings to organize our ideas, create marketing strategies for the event, and share our plan with Dr. Thumm and the PTSO; with this, our vision ultimately came to fruition. Many of these meetings took place before and after school, and during lunch, meaning that we had to give up our own free time to ensure that the event was a success and that all of the members of RHS could enjoy their own fun on May 3rd. We made posters, surveys, and announcements to get the word out for the event as well as recruit volunteers for setup, and thankfully had the help of Mrs. Murray to obtain all of the permits we needed for the trucks. Once we decided which trucks to contact, we emailed each of them a separate letter requesting their attendance at the event and kept in contact with those that agreed. We were charging each student a $3 fee for entry into the event, which would go to our class, and the trucks would collect profits directly from the customers.
The selling of tickets did not go very well at first, nonetheless, we were able to get the participation of over 400 students who purchased tickets. As a team, we all went to ShopRite at Interstate to request donations for the water bottles we would be providing along with the tickets. Despite ShopRite denying our request, we paved the way for future classes to organize this same event. The day of May 3rd was very stressful and required all of our attendance, as well as help from volunteers. We had to set up tables, help direct the trucks where to go, give announcements for when each individual class could come down, and help take the water out of the kitchen and onto the front lawn. After the event ended we all helped with cleanup and thanked each of the teachers who helped the event run so smoothly. When everything was said and done, the Food Truck Event ended up raising over $1500 for the Sophomore Class of 2021 and the food trucks that attended agreed to come next year, starting a new tradition at Ramsey High School!
