We recently became aware that there were numerous Ramsey High School students who left RHS prior to graduating in order to serve our country in World War II. In doing this research, we discovered that two of these men still live in the area.
George Halik left Ramsey High School to serve in World War II and did not return to Ramsey High School after his enlistment was complete. John Schaus left Ramsey High School, fought in the war and returned briefly in November through December of 1945. Sadly, after serving his country honorably, his transcript simply noted that he had “Quit.”
In order to celebrate Veterans Day, Superintendent Dr. Matthew Murphy, Principal Dr. Michael Thumm, and Ramsey Board Of Education members, Mrs. Laura Behrmann and Mr. James Meiman, presented Mr. Schaus and Mr. Halik with honorary Ramsey High School diplomas. In conjunction with today’s ceremony, both of their official transcripts will be formally updated. Prior to today, Mr. Mr. Schaus’ transcript read “Quit” as the reason for leaving school after his return from World War II. The word used to describe his reason for leaving will be amended to read “Live”, in recognition of the fact that John Shaus is far from a “quitter”.
Current Ramsey High School Senior Class President, Michael Ghiorsi, invited Mr. Schaus and Mr. Halik to become honorary members of the Class of 2019. Honoring these men allowed us to create a connection between the Greatest Generation and students of today. These men gave up a portion of their youth to fight for freedom, combat evil, and to defeat murderous dictators around the globe. Their service stands as an example for all and we are proud to claim them as our alums. We are grateful that they shared their time with our students as part of our alumni “Professionals in Residence” outreach initiative. We look forward to honoring them again in June at our graduation ceremony.
