Year 12 and 13 Computer Science A-level students attended an exciting day of informative discussions, interactive sessions and inspirational stories at Computer Science in Action event hosted by Professor Matthew Leeke (University of Birmingham) at Emmanuel Centre in London at the end of November.
The event was very popular with 900 seats strictly allocated and all taken up. From advancements in AI to coding challenges, the experienced speakers across industry and academia, professors of Computer Science from a range of leading UK universities were shining a light on cutting-edge research and current issues from the world of tech.
All the speakers presented a 40 minute talk on a variety of topics that are highly debated by the Computer Science academic circles and that have direct links to the essay questions in the exam papers.
All the speakers presented their areas of expertise in a variety of Computer Related fields and the research done under their guidance by the PhD students. All the topics presented were complex, but were delivered in a strikingly accessible way. Judging by the reaction of the audience all were very warmly welcomed.
The day also included a special session on examination success designed to provide students with the tools that they need to excel. With polls and quizzes throughout the day and plenty of opportunities to ask the speakers questions, this was an incredibly productive day.
As before, our Computer Scientists left us feeling proud and enlightened by their views on the topics in question and by the depth of their understanding of the importance of meeting academics 'in action'.
The students were very appreciative of the opportunities to see real life career prospects in Computer / Information technology fields and beyond and experience first-hand the style of teaching at university level.
It was a great opportunity for our students to see that they were among another 900 students who have similar interests and passions as them.
Many thanks to our Headteacher and SLT for supporting us with this high profile event, that inspires our learners.
