Two House Seats Head to Special Election in Late January
Earlier this week, Governor Walz issued writs to initiate Special Elections for the House seats in Districts 47A and 64A. The Special Elections will take place on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
The vacancies were created when Representative Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger (DFL–Woodbury) and Representative Kaohly Vang Her (DFL–St. Paul) stepped down on November 17. Hemmingsen-Jaeger recently won a Special Election to the state Senate, and Representative Her was elected as the next mayor of St. Paul.
Should the DFL win both races, the Minnesota House would remain evenly split at 67–67 when lawmakers return to session on February 17, 2026. A primary election will be held on December 16, if one is required.
