Primaries, Special Elections, and School Board Meetings
Given the number of unexpected special elections and primaries the state has experienced over the past year, it’s important to remember that school districts are prohibited from holding meetings between 6–8 p.m. on any election day.
In situations where a special election has created an unforeseen conflict with an already scheduled school board meeting, some districts have chosen to convene the meeting before 6 p.m., then recess and reconvene after 8 p.m. It’s not an ideal arrangement, but it has provided a workable solution when meeting dates were set well in advance.
