Have you Heard of Values-Based Listening?
We know that discourse has become challenging in certain circumstances. At a recent conference I was introduced to values-based listening as a way to listen well and to acknowledge the other person’s point of view without saying, “This is what I hear you saying, is that correct?” Instead, try values-based listening to perhaps have a more constructive conversation.
Here’s an example that was provided. If you are in a conversation with staff about professional development around AI and someone is saying, “I don’t want anything to do with AI because it might be misused by students.” Listen fully to their thoughts, and then you might say something like, “I understand that you are concerned about student safety.” By identifying their value, you may be able to better discuss how you might move forward.
So Who was that Superintendent in that Pic Featured in Last Week’s Headlines?
It was fun to read your guesses of this man… Don Lifto…who was the Superintendent of Trimont Public Schools when this pic was taken in 1981. Congratulations to Willmar Superintendent Dr. Bill Adams who was the first to correctly identify Don! Thank you Don for letting us have some fun with your pic!

The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher demonstrates.
The great teacher inspires.” -Posted by Principal_H (@𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬)
