“Strengthening our MJS Community through Human Connection”
In a world that prioritizes the 'virtual,' we are committing one day to the 'vital.' On April 14th, we will pause our digital lives to prioritize our collective identity. Our goal on this day is to rediscover the power of undivided attention, to hear the tone of a voice, to see the spark of an idea in a classmate's eyes, and to engage in the slow, deliberate process of analog creation. We will power down our screens to power up our empathy, our community, and our shared humanity."
On Thursday we had the opportunity to celebrate our February Student Leaders of the Month. At the end of each month our teachers choose two students from each team to represent their team as Leaders of the Month. A big congratulations to our Leaders of the Month and for all they bring to our MJS ONE Community on a daily basis. Thank you to these students for being great role models within our building.

It's official. The love that 7th graders have for Pi Day is irrationally strong! This week, students had the chance to purchase raffle tickets and place them in the cup of the teacher they wanted to 'pi' in the face. Friday was the day! Each teacher took a turn pulling a name from their cup and was 'pi'd by that lucky student in front of the whole grade! In addition to being tons of fun, the grade raised a total of $1,309 that will be donated to The Grove Project in Madison. All in all, we would call this Pi Day a smashing success!
Congratulations to all the winners of the MJS Physical Education class Pickleball Tournaments! At the end of each net game unit, the students can choose to participate in a competitive double elimination tournament. The following pictured students were crowned Pickleball champions of their class period. Great job and congratulations once again on your accomplishment!
This week, our Culture Club has a special presentation by member Lailie Kim, who shared fascinating insights about where she's from: Korea. Lailie prepared slides covering Korean history, traditions, games, food, and language. Students enjoyed seeing pictures of traditional clothing like the hanbok, learning about games such as yun-nori, and tasting delicious snacks, including sweet yakgwa and red bean jelly. We also practiced the Sebae, a traditional respectful bow - students had fun using Sebae to politely ask for more treats! Lailie also introduced us to Hangul, the Korean written language, explaining how it was designed to make literacy accessible for everyone, and we even read several basic words using the alphabet. A big thank you to Lailie for preparing all the materials and leading such an engaging and educational meeting!
Students in the Conflict Resolution Club recently partnered with Project Community Pride to learn about the benefits of journaling as a positive outlet for self-expression. During the session, students discussed how writing can help process emotions and reduce stress, and they were encouraged to share creative photos of their journaling.

In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.
We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:
In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair and deemed to be intentional, excessive, neglectful or student misuse, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.
Costs:
Chromebook (damaged beyond repair) - $365.00
Broken Screen - $90.00
Broken Keyboard - $70.00
Charger - $47.00
Case - $20.00
Other - Will be quoted by the Tech Department
Note: Final assessment of damage and fines are determined by the Technology Department.
Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.
In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.
Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.
