The first week of October is designated as the Week of Respect to recognize the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL) and to prevent bullying and harassment. In an effort to celebrate unity and a commitment to being respectful, safe, and responsible MJS participated in a Week of Respect Spirit Week. In addition, all of our students participated in an Advisory lesson that focused on creating safe spaces within our classrooms so that all students feel valued and respected within our building.
Our 7th Grade Health classes are currently working on various activities to help students experience basic CPR, AED, and first aid. Each student has the opportunity to practice CPR on mannequins as well as the opportunity to practice infant CPR, which is great for those future baby sitters or older siblings.
Pictured are Artharva Aiyer and Eva Bolstad, President and Vice President of the MJS Student Council. As representatives of our Student Body they were asked to replace our old American Flag with a new one. Madison SRO Officer Pete Frank was on hand to lend assistance and to show our students what respect for our flag should look like. At MJS we strive to teach our students that when you look at the flag, remember it is a symbol of the service and sacrifice of the Men and Women who currently serve and those who have served and sacrificed. Being patriotic may be someone who proudly displays the flag, being a Patriot is someone who has served under that flag.
During a recent 7th grade ELA activity, students worked cooperatively to analyze how the elements of RACECER work together to form a logical, organized, well supported paragraph.
We had a special visitor for Green Team this week. Joan is a retired middle school Science teacher who is a member of the Madison Environmental Commission. She taught our Culture Club about native plants and how to propagate seeds! The kids loved hearing about this and planting some of her personally collected native seeds!
Connection and reflection are two important parts of MJS ONE. It is important to stay connected with our families as each of you play an important role in your child’s education. Over the course of the school year, I will be hosting Connect and Reflect sessions with our families. This will provide an opportunity for families to come together with me in person or virtually to connect and reflect on any topics relating to MJS. We will host our first Connect and Reflect with Mr. Perrone on Thursday October 17th at 9:30am.

In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.
We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:
In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair and deemed to be intentional, excessive, neglectful or student misuse, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.
Costs:
Chromebook - $365.00
Charger - $47.00
Case - $20.00
Other - Will be quoted by the Tech Department
Note: Final assessment of damage and fines are determined by the Technology Department.
Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.
In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.
Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.

Thank you for your assistance in helping to remind our students about maintaining and handling our Chromebooks in a responsible and safe way.
