Our first school-wide Color Wars event was an absolute blast, transforming MJS into a kaleidoscope of Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow! The afternoon kicked off with a delicious barbecue provided by our food services, offering a fantastic selection of food for everyone to enjoy. What followed was a spirited display of competition as students participated into various activities. From energetic relay races and splash-filled water balloon tosses to intense games of basketball and nitroball, and brain-teasing rounds of Pictionary and trivia, every moment was packed with fun. The air was buzzing with excitement and teamwork, making for a truly memorable community event. When the dust settled, Team Blue emerged victorious, but it was clear that everyone had an awesome, fun-filled day!
On Friday we had our 13th Annual AERSHES Kickball Tournament. This tournament was created by Mrs. Marotta and Mrs. Young. Each year they determine a organization to donate the money they raise through the registration fees. This year, the money was donated to the National Brain Tumor Society. Students had a blast!
This week Culture Club focused on the performing arts! We enjoyed hearing about the local arts scene from Caroline Romanelli, Director of Arts & Events for the Madison Community Arts Center and Founder of Embrace DIY Productions. She shared her local story from growing up in Madison to founding her own production company. We learned about the Wednesday Weekly Open Mic nights at the Madison Community Arts Center and her Come Original Showcase evenings with live music and pop up shops. All events are designed to be inclusive so they are family-friendly and middle-schooler-friendly. We closed out the club meeting by watching some videos of local performers and getting Embrace DIY t-shirts and stickers. Culture Club Members are ready to enjoy local live music this summer and beyond!
Three of our outstanding 8th grade science students – Arthava Aiyer, Clarissa Kong and Shonith Rajput, recently earned Honorable Mention in the Toshiba/NSTA National Exploravision contest. This contest seeks to challenge students to identify a pressing scientific issue and propose solutions that can be realistically implemented and for which they detail their proposal in a highly technical scientific abstract This team of students selected the problem of excessive runoff from commercial and residential use of nitrogen based fertilizers.
Meeting after school with their coach, Ms. Zabel, going back to late September, they began delving into the chemistry of fertilizers and what to eliminate or reduce from them along with what could they could substitute out, be relatively low cost, yet effective as well as side step the problem of eutrophication. Eventually, they came up with Environmentally Efficient Fertilizers (EEFs) which includes the use of specifically designed bacteria to control the ammonium to nitrate conversion ratio thus providing a controlled release of nutrients and less overgrowth of algae. The result of their tireless efforts was an in depth, 13-page scientific abstract which earned them Honorable Mention in the contest. Congratulations! We are so proud of you.

In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.
We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:
In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair and deemed to be intentional, excessive, neglectful or student misuse, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.
Costs:
Chromebook - $365.00
Charger - $47.00
Case - $20.00
Other - Will be quoted by the Tech Department
Note: Final assessment of damage and fines are determined by the Technology Department.
Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.
In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.
Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.
